Grand Cayman Timeline

1503: Columbus spots islands that he names Las Tortugas.

1655: The islands come under British rule.

1700: Permanent settlement begins with the first royal land grant.

1713-14: Piracy officially ends with the Treaty of Utrecht.

1831-33: First elections; slaves are emancipated.

1962: The Caymans opt to remain a colony of Britain.
