Enjoy some of the magical sights of Rome and explore the famous underground catacombs. Begin with a 90-minute drive into Rome and drive past St. Paul's Basilica, the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, and Circus Maximus. Stop in the vicinity of Venice Square and explore this open space, by foot, known for the monument dedicated to the first king of Italy. Continue walking by the Roman Forum and the Colosseum for an outside view and take a few minutes of free time. Proceed to the Arch of Constantine, and then drive to a typical Roman restaurant for a delicious lunch. After lunch, drive to the Catacombs of Rome. This underground maze of tunnels is where the early Christians, persecuted by the Romans, had to practice their religion in secret and bury their dead.
Comfortable shoes and a light jacket for the catacombs are recommended. Guests will walk through underground tunnels with possible slippery stones. This tour includes a considerable amount of walking, extended periods of standing and approximately 50 steps to negotiate. Tour not recommended for guests with fear of confined spaces. Guests must climb steps/stairs in the catacombs where passages are narrow and uncomfortable. For safety reasons, guests with walking difficulties may not participate on this excursion. The tour may operate in reverse order. No photos or videos are permitted in the catacombs. Due to traffic regulation, motorcoaches are not allowed to get close to some highlights such as the Colosseum; this will involve additional walking portions to and from pick-up/drop-off points during the tour.
