Royal Mile Walking Tour

The best way to appreciate the historical past of Edinburgh is to explore the `Royal Mile` on foot. This famous thoroughfare was the heart of the Old Town of Edinburgh during medieval times and stretches from the high hillside setting of Edinburgh Castle for approximately one mile downhill to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. It is really a continuation of four streets joined together – the Castle Hill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street and the Canongate. You will start with a guided orientation of Edinburgh before getting dropped off for the walk, where, Edinburgh Castle looms above you. This imposing castle-fortress stands high at one end of the Royal Mile, a landmark of considerable importance. Passing Gladstone’s Land, where some of the interesting features of this early 17th century building can be admired. You will also find Lady Stair’s House, now a literary museum dedicated to the works of Burns, Scott and Stevenson, is a 17th century house built down a narrow passageway known as close. Once down the close, you enter a courtyard where the house sits away from the bustle and noise of the street. Then there is St. Giles Cathedral with its crown spire as a much recognized landmark, standing adjacent to Parliament Square, where the buildings now house the Law Courts of Scotland. Famous church reformer John Knox once lived here and his 16th century house has been rebuilt extensively through the years, and now has a red-tiled gable roof, projecting timber gallery and outside stairs. You will also see the Church of Canongate, where many historical figures are buried in the churchyard including the murdered Italian secretary of Mary Queen of Scots.
