Start your tour from Heimaey harbor, which was almost lost in the 1973 volcanic eruption. Sail around the cliffs surrounding the harbor, exploring bird colonies and caves that are only accessible by boat. The Westman Islands are home to a variety of sea bird species, with an estimated 6 to 8 million puffins, making it a unique place to see these birds up-close. There are also large colonies of gannets and guillemots, along with other nesting sea birds. Keep an eye out for whales, including orcas, dolphins, and porpoises. After enjoying views of the island and bird cliffs, the tour ends with a sail into Klettshellir (Cliff Cave), where music will be played on board to enhance the cave's acoustics. Then return to the harbor, completing your journey around this small North Island.
Requirements & Restrictions: Guests must be able to step on and off the boat. Surfaces underfoot can be slippery, and guests are advised to exercise caution when getting on and off the boat, moving around, or standing. Guests with mobility difficulties are advised to travel with an able-bodied companion.
Good to Know: This tour is weather permitting and sometimes it is not possible to circumnavigate. When circumnavigation is not possible guests are guaranteed the experience of seeing the bird cliffs from as many different angles as possible. Puffins leave land mid-August and wildlife sighting cannot be guaranteed. Due to the nature of the tour (boat trip), guests can expect added movement to the boat as they sail from waves/currents.
