Porto, the economic and cultural capital of northern Portugal, is a city with ancient origins that gave its name to the entire country. Its architectural heritage and enviable position near the mouth of the River Douro have made it a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your tour of this fascinating city will begin with the Porto Cathedral (in Portugese: Sé do Porto), originally a 12th-century Romanesque building adorned with works of art by some of the greatest Portuguese artists. You will then proceed to Ribeira, where you will board a "rabelo" — a boat specially built for navigating the River Douro, and used in earlier times to transport wine to the wineries. You will cruise along the Douro, sailing under some of the many bridges that connect the two parts of the city. Admire scenic views of the historic district with its narrow streets, houses and buildings that beautifully slope down towards the riverbanks. After your cruise, you will have the opportunity to visit one of the wineries that produce the city’s world-famous port wine, and enjoy a wine tasting. When you’re done, you’ll return to the ship.
