Details

Leaving your ship, you will drive through the downtown area of Toulon – a city well known for its ties to the ancient Romans, who called it Telo Martius due to its strategic maritime location. Toulon still harbors a major French naval base and is now an attractive and bustling city despite hard times during World War II. The Toulon fleet scuttled its own ships upon arrival of the Germans, and many Allied landings took place along the coast here in 1944. As you leave town en route to Cassis, watch for the scenic views and cliffs of the massif on the way. Cassis, a small town nestled at the base of a medieval castle, is widely regarded as one of the most romantic places on Earth. This charming fishing port awaits your exploration and is filled with the aromas of Provençal herbs and the salty tinge of the sea. Stroll through the streets with your guide and then enjoy the harbor on your own during some free time.

Notes

The drive to Cassis is approximately one hour each way. In Cassis, there is a small train during the high season, bringing guests from the coach parking to the center of the village. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The scenic coastal road is subject to closure during high winds; an alternative route will be substituted.
