Details

Your destination, the province of Pontevedra, lies to the south of Vigo. You’ll drive to the beautiful medieval walled city of Tui, located on a hill next to the Portuguese border on the River Mino. Visit Tui’s imposing cathedral, built in the 12th century and later converted into a battlement-studded fortress—the logical response to the frequent invasions endured by the town. Its tower forms a magnificent balcony over the river, where the city appears to be terraced out of the hill. A tasting of locally produced wines awaits you at the beautiful Parador (state-owned hotel), which is a reproduction of a rural Galician country house set among mountains and rivers. Follow the border to El Rosal—the part of the province where the majority of the Ribeiro wine is made—and continue to the coastal city of Bayona. See the Monterreal Castle. This old fortress is now the site of a Parador but retains its original outer walls with its battlements and sentry walks, clock tower and prince's tower. Relax over some delicious tapas and sample more of the fabulous wines of Galicia.

Notes

This is an active excursion involving a lot of walking and some stairs and cobblestones to negotiate to access the balcony at the cathedral in Tui. There are no rest stops on the drive.
